Tokyo's gay saunas are called hattenba (発展場) — literally "development spots." Unlike European gay saunas with their jacuzzis and lounges, Tokyo's version is stripped down and direct: showers, lockers, a few private rooms, maybe a dark room. No frills, one purpose.
Tokyo has no gay-specific onsen, but several public bathhouses — sento — are long-standing cruising spots, and they work as social hubs as much as anything else. Meetups get organised on online boards, and the later it gets, the more that matters.
Entry rules, themes, and prices change often, so check the venue's website or Twitter before you go. Most places also ask you to take your shoes off at the entrance — a small Tokyo ritual before anything else happens.
A word on etiquette: be discreet, don't talk loudly in groups, and leave every area as you found it. That is the minimum expected of visitors here, and it is what keeps these places open to outsiders at all.
Gay Saunas:
Tucked away in Nakano, GB Hunks is Tokyo's go-to cruising sauna for bears and muscle men — big, beefy, and built. Every Thursday and Saturday they run a mask night that takes the atmosphere up a notch. Entry is not for everyone: the age limit runs 20 to 50 and the door policy is strict, favouring short hair, scruffy wolf types, sporty builds and muscle guys. Over 50 with the body for it still gets in.

A spacious sauna in the middle of Nichome, with saunas, a tanning machine, a video room, a dark zone and a snack room. Private rooms cost extra. Open 24/7, and busiest with locals and tourists alike after a night of clubbing. There are no entry restrictions at all — all ages, types and nationalities are welcome, which makes the crowd more mixed than almost anywhere else in the city.

The vibe leans masculine with a wild edge and plenty of action; slim guys are rare here and bears fit right in. The swing room stays busy, with someone always waiting for the next move, and it is easy to blend in whether you are hunting or being hunted. Young masculine bottoms get a lot of attention.

For years VOLCANO was one of the most famous gay cruising venues in Tokyo, and arguably one of Asia's most talked-about muscle-oriented hotspots. Since it introduced a Japanese-only policy in October 2025 it has not been accessible to international visitors. A traditional bathhouse with 59 years of history. It looks ordinary from the outside, but the gay crowd here is surprisingly strong — mostly muscled or mature men, and the atmosphere is subtly flirtatious rather than obvious, especially after 10 PM when it gets busiest. It is also one of the few genuinely tattoo-friendly sento in Tokyo, and a lot of local guys with ink come here regularly. Five types of bath and two saunas, including a rare open-air bath.
